Discrepancy in ER and PR Levels of Breast Carcinoma in Pre and Postmastectomy Specimens

Abstract
The role of steroid hormone receptor in the management of breast cancer is well established. Among the various parameters that may influence the measurement of receptors in tumor tissue are the thermal lability and the proteolytic susceptibility
of
the
hormone receptor complex.
To evaluate the influence the time o sample procurement and the significance of time lkapsed between devascularization of the tumor to specimen freezing, ER and PR were determined by the dextran coated chrcol method twice the specimens of cases
of
breast cancer taken before and after mastectomy.
ER was positive in 7 cases and negative in 3 cases in the premastectomy specimens. In the postmastectomy specimens, ER was positive in 4 cases and negative in 6 cases. 3 of tumors changed from positive ER values in the premastectomy specimens to
negative in the postmastectomy specimens. ER values in 4 cases of 7 tumors which were ER positive in the premastectomy specimens decreased in the postmastectomy specimens.
PR was positive in 4 case and negative in 6 case sin the premastectomy specimens. In the postmastectomy specimens, PR was positive in 1 cases and negative in 9 cases. 3 of 4 tumors changed from positive PR values in 1 cases of 4 tumors which were
PR
positive in the premastectomy specimens decreased in the postmastectomy specimens.
The authors conclued that premastectomy specimen in ususally a more reliable indicator o hormonal receptor status than the mastectomy specimen and recommend that excisional biopsy specimens be taken for ER and PR assays before mastectomy.
